Lidl are committed to public consultation and we are therefore delighted to be able to provide members of the local community with an overview of the proposed development. This website enables you to view the public consultation leaflet, which was recently sent to local addresses, as well as download the most recent plans for the site.

The Proposal

The site for the proposed Lidl store is located to the south of Tyne View and to the north of the Scotswood Road. The site extends to 1.42 hectares and currently comprises of undeveloped land and a former public house which is currently occupied by Norland Construction Limited.

The surrounding area is characterised primarily by commercial uses, with a row of local shops located to the north of Tyne View. Residential areas are located further north, with vacant land and industrial areas located to the south of Scotswood Road.

Lidl propose to develop a new store on the site, which will feature an attractive, single storey glazed frontage to Scotswood Road, with the car park extending to the west of the store. The new store will extend to 2,243 sq m gross internal area (GIA), with a net retail sales area of 1,415 sq m. The new store will feature a dedicated in-store bakery close to the main entrance. The delivery bay will be located to the north of the store.

The new Lidl store will provide the following benefits to the local area:

  • A brand new store that will provide a clean and fresh shopping experience to meet the needs of customers;
  • A contemporary building design that will complement the surrounding area;
  • A dedicated in-store bakery;
  • Employment opportunities for local residents; and
  • Living Wage Foundation rate for all eligible employees and no zero hour contracts.

Access will be taken from Scotswood Road along the site’s southern boundary. The car park will provide 89 standard parking spaces, with 8 disabled spaces and 8 parent and child spaces, which will be positioned close to the customer entrance. The car park will provide 105 spaces in total.

Dedicated pedestrian access will be provided from Scotswood Road to the south of the site and from Tyne View to the north. Bicycle parking will be provided under the entrance canopy on the western elevation, close to the store entrance and pedestrian access route.

It is proposed that the store will be open between the hours of:

  • 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday (including Bank Holidays); and
  • 10am to 4pm Sunday.

Normally there will be a maximum of two HGV deliveries to the store per day. All store waste will be collected at the same time as the deliveries, therefore minimising HGV movements within the site.

Opportunity to Comment

We have recently posted 9,063 leaflets to local residents and businesses surrounding the site to inform the local community of the proposal. The leaflet included a pre-paid response card inviting comments.

Local residents and Ward Councillors have also been invited to attend a public exhibition on Tuesday 30th October 2018 at Lemington Community Centre, Tyne View, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE15 8RZ, from 1pm to 6pm.
