The project
The Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) instructed Rapleys London Planning Team to submit a full planning application for a first-floor rear extension at Maryland Seventh Day Adventist Church, 58 Janson Road, London. The clients’ intentions were to provide a fit for purpose church and community space that was accessible for all and provided the space for their existing community activities. The proposal included an internal lift that will travel between the two floors allowing all attendees to be able to use the community rooms, canteen, and children’s spaces. The proposed lift took into consideration the requirement for a fire fighter lift to be London Plan 2021 compliant.
Our solution
- By enlarging the community floor, allowed the space to be divided into a community eating hall, a space for children’s Saturday School and other local community-based activities. The new floor space allowed for a more flexible use and activities, so the Church could offer the venue for hire to local community activities and events. The new extension to the rear included an additional toilet for DDA compliance and Mother/Father toddler changing spaces and a community kitchen/ servery.
- The rear extension has a flat roof to cater for minimal plant that will not be visible from street level or adjoining/ neighbouring properties. The aim of the building was to use renewable and sustainable technologies but also incorporate a system that will ensure all windows of the church are fixed.
- The project team consisted of Planning Consultants (Rapleys LLP), Daylight and Sunlight Consultant (Rapleys LLP), Architect (KA -A), and Transport Consultant (Steer Group).
